Rare and superb WW1 Canadian Officer’s SD Visor Cap made by the most prestigious military tailors and hatters, Hawkes & Co. of Saville Row, London.
This is the finest example of a 1902/3 Officer’s Service Dress Cap which perfectly retains its original shape and structure. The cap’s khaki Melton Wool material and construction are of the highest quality, as would be expected from Hawkes & Co.
The cap’s superb shape is supported by a wired crown, and also a Hawkes & Co custom made metal support which is fitted to the front interior of the cap.
The cap has its original brass ‘ King’s Crown Canada Militia ‘ chin strap buttons, and also its original adjustable quality leather chin strap.
The rear of the cap has 4 reinforced circular eyelet vents.
The exterior is in superb all original condition with only one, possibly two tiny pin head nips to the crown’s surface, and another pin head disturbance to the rear cap band.
The cap’s interior is fabulous with only the absolute minimal service wear, and no damage.
The interior is also well marked with the silk black & gold maker’s label for Hawkes & Co. Saville Row, and their Royal Coat of Arms Warrant as Military Tailors to His Majesty King George V.

Mobilized on August 6

, 1914, trained at Valcartier, Quebec and embarked from Quebec on October 3, 1914 aboard the S.S. Tunisian, disembarking at Plymouth on October 14, 1914. The Regiment attended Training Camp at Salisbury Plain, from October 1914 to February 1915, before serving with distinction in both France and Flanders.
The prestigious London Company of Hawkes & Co., was founded by Thomas Hawkes in 1771.
On December 23, 1912 Hawkes & Co. purchased No.1 Saville Row, London W1., which dates this cap as having been made between December 1912 and February 1915, when the Regiment left England for France.
Hawkes & Co. amalgamated with Gieves & Co. in 2009, and today are still at No.1 Saville Row, London, W1.
