Festival brings premium sakes to Hawaii not sold in the U.S.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The largest sake festival outside of Japan returns to the Hawaii Convention Center this Friday, Oct. 25, and attendees can sample nearly 600 types of premium sake, most of which are not sold in the U.S.
Sake expert Tassho Pearce, founder of Joy of Sake and specialist of World Sake Imports, joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about the art of creating the beverage from fermented rice, along with Chef Jon Matsubara of FEAST restaurant in Manoa, one of more than a dozen top local chefs serving tasty dishes to pair with the sakes.
Dishes include Nami Kaze‘s Black Vinegar Braised Pork Belly, Pig and the Lady’s Fried Oyster Po’ Bao, Robata Jinya’s Kona Kanpachi & Kauai Shrimp Ceviche, Halekulani’s Prawn and Poi Risotto and more.
The event is an opportunity for the public to taste entries submitted to the U.S. National Sake Appraisal, a blind tasting with judges from Japan and the U.S. conducted every year in Honolulu. The sakes presented for tasting are shipped directly from the breweries in Japan via refrigerated containers and arrive in peak condition.
